On literary importance: Premier's guest lecture |
|
Literature has an important place in the ordinary business of life – this was the key message NSW Premier Nathan Rees had for College of Arts students during his UWS visit on 15 October.
The Premier was invited by Professor Ivor Indyk, Whitlam Chair in Writing and Society for the University's Writing and Society Research Group, to deliver a guest lecture to students at the Kingswood campus.
“Our aim was to show that literary knowledge is a force to be reckoned with, and I think the Premier’s talk demonstrated how that might be so,” said Professor Indyk.
The Premier spoke to an audience of 200 first-year Bachelor of Arts (English, Text and Writing) students about what literature means to him.
“Nathan Rees has an honours degree in literature, and this has served him well in his career. So the lecture was a great opportunity for students to see that there are many things you can do with a major in literature,” said Associate Professor Anthony Uhlmann.
Under the guidance of Associate Professor Uhlmann, the students are studying the literary period from the romantics to modern literature, including a wide range of poets, along with a close focus on Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, The Waste Land by TS Eliot, and Samuel Beckett’s Endgame.
The Premier was received by Associate Professor Uhlmann, Professor Ivor Indyk, and the Executive Dean of the College of Arts, Professor Wayne McKenna. Karyn Paluzzano, State Member of Parliament for Penrith, also attended the lecture.
Following the guest lecture, the Premier was presented with a selection of works published by the Writing and Society Research Group’s Giramondo Publishing Company.
